Waterford City 12 : Fermoy 20.
City played East Cork side Fermoy in the semi -final of the Sullivan Cup last Sunday at home in Kilbarry. Being a home semi -final and having gone through last season unbeaten at home City were confident of reaching the final for the third time in four years. However it was not to be as Fermoy playing the windy conditions better prevailed to book a place against Charleville in next weeks’ decider.
City played with a strong wind in the first half but did take advantage of the conditions sufficiently especially towards the end of the half. Fermoy started the better and led 3-0 from an early penalty from the boot of their impressive outhalf Shane O Riordan. His long relieving kicks from the handfrom his own “22” was crucial in the first half as City were piling on the pressure. It took City 25 minutes to score when Niall Coady scored in the corner after nice handling by both backs and forwards. Prop Karl Reade added a second try on 35 minutes to increase the lead after good work by the forwards. Aaron Foskin converted with an excellent kick from the touchline.City had a few opportunities to add to the score but handling errors and turnovers cost them additional points which would prove to be the difference at the end. However , 12-3 ahead at half time playing at home even against the elements was promising for City.
But it was Fermoy who dominated the 2nd half not allowing City out of their half for the majority of the game. The physicality and intensity required to win the game was not there collectively and time and time again Fermoy turned over ball on City at the breakdown which did not allow them to get sufficient momentum and territory. Fermoy scored two tries in the second half to even up the try count but it was their outhalf’s excellent kicking display that mattered on the score board in the end and sent them into the final. It was a disappointing display by the home team overall and the team will need to improve if they are to be competitive in the league campaign starting shortly.
So City now need to focus on the Division 3 Junior League which begins on 9th October away to Abbeyfeale. It will be a difficult campaign which will require continuous commitment and focus from the players to be in the race again this season after finishing a creditable 3rd last year.
